Diet is an essential part of the BeweegKuur. The lifestyle consultant refers each participant to a dietitian for an individual consultation. During this visit, you will be given personal advice about healthy eating in relation to diabetes and to general health. Many patients with diabetes will have already visited a dietitian in the past. Nonetheless, this extra visit is important because your lifestyle will change in the course of the BeweegKuur. The dietitian will talk you through the changes to your eating pattern that will be necessary and will also discuss this with the lifestyle consultant. The lifestyle consultant will provide you with further assistance and regularly refer to the dietitian’s advice.
Individual consultation with the dietitian
The dietitian will advise you on the changes you need to make to your eating pattern when you start exercising more. Once you start increasing the amount of regular exercise, you will burn more energy. To prevent negative effects, you will need to change your diet. And if you do experience a hypo during or after exercising, it is important that you know what to do.
Group meetings
The lifestyle consultant organises a series of local group meetings for all the BeweegKuur participants in the neighbourhood. Each participant attends five group meetings. The dietitian is responsible for the content of these meetings. The main theme is ‘diet’, but other subjects such as ‘exercising with diabetes’ are also discussed. The group aspect of these meetings is also very important. You can share experiences with other participants or ask questions. It is also an opportunity to arrange (in groups) to go walking or cycling or to join a club.
